Why are your Guppy/Betta fry dying? It’s likely starvation. Moina is the solution because it is 50% smaller than Daphnia and moves slower
Why Do Most Fry Die in the First Week?
It’s a heartbreaking reality for breeders: you have hundreds of fry hatch, but a week later, only a dozen survive.
The culprit is almost always starvation.
Newborn fry (especially Bettas, Gouramis, and Ram Cichlids) have tiny mouths. Standard pellet food is too hard. Baby Brine Shrimp (BBS) are excellent but expensive and time-consuming to hatch daily. Daphnia are often too large for newborns to swallow.
The Solution? Moina Macrocopa.
Often called “Japanese Water Fleas,” Moina are the secret weapon of professional fish farms. Now, you can buy a pure starter culture directly from us and boom your population at home.
Moina vs. Daphnia: Why Moina Wins
Many hobbyists confuse Moina with Daphnia. While they are related, Moina is superior for breeding purposes.
| Feature | Moina Macrocopa (What We Sell) | Daphnia Magna (Common) |
| Size | Tiny (400µm – 1mm) | Large (up to 5mm) |
| Protein Content | ~50% Dry Weight | ~37% Dry Weight |
| Reproduction | Doubles every 24-48 hours | Doubles every 4-7 days |
| Water Tolerance | Thrives in low oxygen & dirty water | Sensitive to ammonia & low oxygen |
| Best For | Newborn Fry (Day 1) | Adult Fish / Larger Fry |
Conclusion: If you want your fry to grow 2x faster, you need the high protein and lipid content of Moina.

How to Culture Moina Like a Pro
Once you receive your order from us, follow these steps to turn one bag into an endless supply of food.
1. The Setup
You do not need an aquarium filter. Moina hate strong currents.
- Container: A 20-liter bucket or an old fish tank.
- Water: Use aged aquarium water (rich in bacteria) or dechlorinated tap water.
- Aeration: Very Low. Use an air stone set to just 1-2 bubbles per second. This prevents a “scum layer” from forming on top without exhausting the Moina.
2. The Secret Food Recipe
Moina are filter feeders. They eat bacteria and yeast suspended in the water column.
- Yeast Method: Dissolve a pinch of Baker’s Yeast (active dry yeast) in warm water until it looks like milk. Pour it into the culture tank until the water is slightly hazy.
- Warning: If the water is cloudy/white, you overfed. This will crash the culture.
- Green Water (Chlorella): The best food source. If you have green water, your Moina will be packed with vitamins.
3. The Harvest Strategy
This is where most people fail. Moina reproduce so fast that they will overpopulate and crash (die off) in 5-7 days if not managed.
- Harvest Daily: You must harvest 20-25% of the culture every day, even if you don’t need the food. This keeps the population young and reproducing.
- Water Changes: Perform a 20% water change twice a week, carefully siphoning waste from the bottom.
Why Did My Culture Crash?
We want you to succeed. Here are the top reasons cultures fail and how to fix them.
Problem 1: The water smells rotten.
- Cause: Overfeeding yeast. The bacteria bloom consumed all the oxygen.
- Fix: Stop feeding immediately. Change 50% of the water. Increase aeration slightly.
Problem 2: The Moina are not reproducing.
- Cause: Temperature is too low.
- Fix: Moina love warmth (25°C – 31°C). If you are keeping them in a cold room, add a small heater.
Problem 3: I see “shells” floating on top.
- Cause: This is a molt. It is a good sign! It means your Moina are growing.
